Additional Natasha's Dance: A Cultural History of Russia Information

This tremendously attractive, ambitious, dizzying book is in every way a worthy successor to Figes' bestselling "A People's Tragedy". The whole panorama of Russia's mighty culture is conjured up in a way that is fresh, intimate and immediate. Whether talking about music or novels, buildings or paintings, Figes' enthusiasm and literary brilliance sweeps the reader along through a series of great set-piece chapters.

What Customers Say About Natasha's Dance: A Cultural History of Russia:

Anyone who has spent time in the real Russia, away from the tourist sites, soon becomes aware of the passion and tragedy of Russia. Americans could learn much fromRussian history and see some similarities to what is happening here now.I've been to Russia 14 times in the last 40 years and have always been intrigued by the uniqueness of the "Ruussian Persona". This book is a great study of the Russian culture from 1700 to 1940's. Wish I had read it several years ago.For a great novel on Leningrad (St.Petersburg) during the seige of WWII, read "The Bronz Horseman" a novel by Paulina Simon also a 5 star read."Enemy at the Gate" is an interesting and well done film of the WWII battle for Stalingrad.

Arrived in good time. The book shows definite signs of use, however, for the price it was a great bargain.

This is clearly a work of excellent scholarship. This can lead to redundancies but also greater perspective on each topic.

I assume there is more to know (there always is). Everything you might ever want to know about Russian culture, if you are a serious student.

Figes is extremely thorough and at times overly lengthy because he takes on one particular aspect at a time, hence, the time progression is not quite linear: Figes loops back to an earlier time and then proceeds forward again. but you are well served by this book on its own.

The writing style is sophisticated but not aloof. His knowledge of history, culture, lterature and music is outstanding.

Allow enough time to read this work with the seriouness it merits.

I ordered this at the same time as Land of the Firedbird, another book about Russia, and I liked the latter better.

Extremely well-written and researched book. Especially good item if you are planning a trip to Russia and are interested in their art and literature.
